4 Tips for Sleeping after Spine Surgery

Category: Surgery Recovery | Author: Stefano Sinicropi

sleep after surgerySleep is absolutely essential to a successful recovery from spine surgery. Without sufficient sleep, your body will not have the full ability to heal itself. A patient’s sleep schedule can be interrupted due to a number of surgery-related issues, including: anesthesia after-effects, anxiety, and pain from the surgical wounds. It is up to the patient to do everything they can to help their body’s natural healing process. One of the best ways to do that is by getting enough sleep. In this blog we are going to offer some advice for getting the best night’s sleep after your minimally invasive spine surgery.

Tip #1 – Check your Position

The position in which you sleep has a big impact on your spine. Certain positions can increase pressure on your spine and wake you up in the night. Other positions will take the stress off your back and help you sleep soundly.

For more information on specific sleep positions, read our previous blog on the topic.

Tip #2 – Mattresses & Pillows Matter

Make sure your mattress has enough support, and your pillow provides enough comfort. If you have had your mattress and/or pillow for a long time, it may be time to replace them.

Tip #3 – Supplement with Pain Medication

If pain is preventing you from falling asleep at night, take an over-the-counter NSAID about 30 minutes before your bedtime. If your pain is severe, your physician may prescribe stronger pain killers to help you sleep.

Tips #4 – Exercise as Much as Possible

Getting regular exercise during the day helps you sleep better at night. Obviously, if you are recovering from surgery, your exercise options will be limited. But you can still get up, move around, and do physical therapy exercises throughout the day.

If you are worried about sleeping after your surgery, talk to your surgeon during your pre-surgical consultation about their recommendations for sleeping well.
