4 Tips to Avoid Back Pain while doing Yard Work

Recently we wrote an article that offered some tips for dodging back pain while kayaking and canoeing. Continuing with that theme of summer activities that may cause back pain, this article will discuss a few tips for avoiding spine injuries and back pain when working in the yard this summer.

Lift with your Legs, Not your Back

This is a common adage among weight lifters, but it applies to any situation that requires you to lift heavy objects. Many people have a tendency to put most of the lifting strain on their lower back muscles. This is sure to lead to pain and injury. Whether you’re lifting a pot of soil, or a big bag of mulch, always lift with your legs to avoid back pain.

If you Need Help, Ask for it!

A lot of yard work projects require more than one person, especially projects that necessitate heavy lifting. If you are feeling overwhelmed, or can’t easily lift something on your own, ask a friend, family member, or neighbor to help you out.

Stay Hydrated

Yard work can be exhausting on a hot summer day. If you don’t make a conscious effort to keep yourself hydrated and drink lots of water, you could end up fainting from heat exhaustion or dehydration. Keep drinking fluids, and take breaks if you feel light headed.

Apply Sunscreen

Be sure to apply sunscreen even if it’s cloudy. Sunburns are common on the back and are quite painful. They can also contribute to skin cancer, so lather up when you’re outside in your yard!
