Baby Your Back

Back pain is a problem that affects more than 90 percent of the population at some point in their life, which makes sense considering how much stress and strain we put on our spines throughout the day. Many of the non-operative treatments for these common spinal problems don’t just help the underlying problem, but they help to improve our whole body health as well. In today’s blog, we take a closer look at five spine pain treatments that can also improve your overall health and wellness.

Improving Your Spine And Your Body

Here’s a look at a number of adjustments and treatments you can pursue that can not only improve your back pain, but make you a healthier person overall. These techniques oftentimes work best in combination with one another, so don’t just pick one of these options and go with it. Try to consider multiple or all of the options listed below for your back pain, and your spine and your whole body will be better off for it.

  1. Weight Loss – Our spines handle an immense amount of stress each day, and that burden becomes even heavier if we are overweight or obese. The more you weigh, the more stress your spine needs to help disperse with every movement you make. Losing weight can also help with your overall health by helping to control your blood pressure and other important metrics. Strive to lose a little weight, and your spine and body will feel this burden being lifted.
  2. Exercise – Some people believe that when they are injured, the best thing they can do for their body is rest. Resting is great in the short-term, but oftentimes after a short while, movement and exercise will actually produce better outcomes than long-term rest. And as you probably know, exercise is also extremely beneficial for your body as a whole. You’ll become stronger and your body and spine will be better able to handle stress, which can help you avoid an injury.
  3. Get Better Sleep – It’s amazing how impactful a good or bad night’s sleep can be on our back and our bodies. Sleep is a restorative process that helps to cleanse the body of dead cells and recover from the stresses of the day. If you’re not getting adequate sleep, these helpful functions can’t be completed as needed, and your back and body can suffer. Make your room an ideal sleep environment, go to sleep and wake up around the same time each day and replace your mattress if you can’t remember the last time you upgraded your sleeping space.
  4. Hot And Cold Therapy – Use heat and ice to your advantage to help control fluid movement in your body. Heat can help draw blood to an area, while ice can be used to reduce inflammation and swelling. You can use heat and ice to control symptoms in your spine or anywhere on your body that’s aching. A warm bath or an ice pack can work wonders.
  5. Target Your Core – Finally, your core muscles provide stability to a number of bodily systems, including your spine. Improving your core can provide your whole body with a better foundation and reduce pain in areas like your back, neck or hamstrings. If you need help developing a core-strengthening program, our team would be happy to help provide guidance!

If you can pursue a few of these techniques, we’re confident that your spine pain will start to decrease and your whole body will start to feel healthier. And for individualized tips or for help with your back pain, reach out to Dr. Sinicropi’s office today at (651) 430-3800.
