March And Your Spine

After Spinal Surgery

March is here, and that means it’s time for another installment on how each month of the year can challenge your spine in unique ways. We’ve already explained how August, September, October, November, December, January and February can be hard on your spine, and now we set our sights on March.

How March Can Be Hard On Your Spine

Here’s a look at some of the challenges March presents for your spine, and how you can prevent and treat these issues.

  • March Madness – St. Patrick’s Day and the NCAA basketball tournament dominate March, and while you may not be lacing up your shoes to participate in The Big Dance, every year we see an uptick in basketball-related back injuries as more recreational athletes step back on the hardwood for some pickup games. Learn how to protect and treat basketball-related spine pain in this blog. And if you’re just going to be lounging on the couch watching all the games, you need to know some healthy habits to avoid spine pain during long stretches of inactivity.
  • Taking Luck Out Of The Equation – You might be trying to get lucky and find a pot of gold this month, but when it comes to recovery after spine surgery, there’s very little luck involved. Instead of wishing for a good recovery and hoping you’ll get lucky, you’ll find that you’ll have a much better chance at a full recovery if you set goals and put in the work. In this blog, we talk about taking the uncertainty out of your recovery after spine surgery by setting goals and sticking to your physical therapy routine. You make your own luck when you put in the work.
  • Increased Intimacy – Speaking of “getting lucky,” in this blog we touch on a subject that most people are a little shy talking about in regards to their spine surgery and recovery, and that’s their love life. Spine surgery can actually help improve your sex life, as we discuss in this blog, and we explain how patients who are considering having a spinal fusion procedure can safely remain intimate after the procedure.
  • Managing Your Weight – March 4th is National Obesity Day, and it’s less of a celebration and more of an awareness campaign to draw attention to the health issues caused by obesity. Your spine is one of the main structures that can be affected and damaged by excess weight, so it’s important that you work towards a healthy weight. We talk about the subject and how you can help prevent your weight from negatively affecting your spine in this blog.
  • Our Internal Clocks – Finally, daylight savings time is in March, and we’ll lose an hour of sleep along the way. This lost sleep can have an impact on our internal body clocks, but spine injuries can have the same effect. Learn more about how back pain and injuries can throw off your body’s internal clock in this blog.

That’s it for the month of March! Swing back to our blog next month when we tackle the rainy month of April. We’ll touch on subjects like spring cleaning, tax day and working out in the rain. You won’t want to miss it! And if you have back pain between now and then, consider setting up an appointment with Dr. Sinicropi’s office today!
