Spine Care Tips

Our bodies take a beating throughout our daily lives, so every so often it’s important to take a step back and let it rest and rejuvenate. One of the most overworked parts of our body is our spine, because it is tasked with shouldering and dispersing stress that’s channeled through your vertebral column. When you’re treating your body to some rest and relaxation, don’t forget to indulge your spine! Today, we share five ways to pamper and rejuvenate your spine.

Exercise

You might be thinking that exercise and physical activity is the opposite of pampering your spine, but activity helps strengthen spinal structures, build muscle and increase healthy blood flow to the area. Moderate-intensity exercises are a great way to reward your spine after a long day stuck in a chair at school or work.

Massage

Whether it’s from your spouse or a licensed masseuse, a massage is another great way to pamper the spine. A massage can help relieve pressure or relax stiff spinal muscles.

Health Foods

Although your taste buds and stomach might enjoy that piece of chocolate cake or those potato chips, they won’t do any favors for your spine. Foods that are high in sugar and fat can lead to inflammation in your joints and spine, which can make pre-existing conditions like nerve compression or bone spurs much worse. Reward your spine by filling up on essential vitamins and minerals.

Heating Pads

Heating pads are another great way to pamper your spine because similar to exercise, they can help increase healthy blood flow to the spinal structures. Nerve damage can set in if spinal structures aren’t getting enough oxygenated blood, so a 30-minute session with a heating pad can do wonders for your spine.

Mattress Check

If your mattress is over eight years old, odds are it’s no longer providing you with adequate support in all areas of your body. Some pressure points in the mattress will begin to sag and that can shift pressure to other areas of your body, like your spine. If your back isn’t appropriately cushioned while you’re sleeping, eventually you’ll start to feel it. Pamper your back by choosing a new mattress that provides even support to your body.
