New research published by the market research firm OnePoll found that a large portion of Americans have been dealing with neck or back pain for years.

According to the research that was recently published, roughly one in four Americans reports having suffered from neck or back pain for at least five years, while 16 percent say they’ve been dealing with such aches and pains for more than a decade. The survey, which involved 2,000 adults, also revealed that 80 percent suffered from neck or back pain at some point in their life, and 70 percent said spine issues inhibited their normal activities.

What’s Causing Chronic Neck and Back Pain?

The survey also attempted to pinpoint some of the reasons why people have developed chronic back or neck pain. Here’s a look at some of the responses as to why they believe their neck or back is always hurting:

  • 57 percent cited heavy lifting.
  • 56 percent said their work environment aggravated their pain.
  • 51 percent said sitting too long each day.
  • More than 40 percent blame standing or walking too much throughout the day.
  • 28 percent said poor mattress quality.
  • 25 percent said their office chair played a role in their pain.
  • 20 percent said their pain is caused by walking up stairs or other routine daily activities.
